Having discolored teeth can immediately make you want to hide your smile when you should be showing it off. Luckily there are many options to take care of discolored teeth. Dr. Ira Goldberg of Morris County Dental Associates, a provider of cosmetic dentistry in Succasunna, NJ, discusses the solutions available at their office.
Professional Teeth Whitening
This is what you probably think of when you think about getting a whiter smile. Professional teeth whitening carries many benefits compared to over the counter options. Drugstore whitening products often lead to uneven and splotchy results. There’s also the danger of the bleaching agent coming into contact with soft tissue and causing problems with sensitivity. These products are often one size fits all.
At Morris County Dental Associates, we offer multiple whitening options. First, we offer various in-office whitening solutions. These include Opalescence “Go”, Max KOR®, and Ultra KOR®. At a consultation, we’ll discuss your cosmetic goals and budget. This helps us to make sure which of our in-office options are best suited to meet your needs.
We also offer take-home whitening trays. This is a more gradual solution to take care of discolored teeth. Custom whitening trays will be made from a mold of your smile. This ensures they fit perfectly and provide even results while protecting your soft tissue. The dentist will guide you in determining how long you’ll need to wear the trays before getting the smile you want.
Porcelain Veneers
Traditional teeth whitening techniques can’t always take care of certain stains and discoloration. Teeth that are “dead” or stained due to genetics may not respond to these techniques. Porcelain veneers provide a quality alternative. They’re made of thin shells of high-quality dental ceramic and go over the front and sides of your teeth. The material is designed to be durable and stain-resistant.
For veneers, we’ll first remove a small amount of tooth structure. We want to make sure the veneers lay flat with the rest of your smile. Molds will be taken for your veneers to be custom-made. When they’re ready, we’ll fit them to your teeth and make sure they’re comfortable and look the way you want. If you’re satisfied, we’ll permanently bond them to your teeth.
Dental Bonding
If you’re looking for an economical solution or aren’t ready to commit to a permanent one, dental bonding offers a quality alternative to porcelain veneers. The bonding material is made of a composite resin that’s color-matched to the rest of your smile. It’s molded to the shape and size of your tooth, so it can fix things like cosmetic chips as well.
For dental bonding, minimal tooth structure is removed from the front of the tooth. We want to make sure the bonding material adheres properly. It’s molded to your tooth and we make sure you’re happy with the result. When you’re satisfied, a special light is used to cure and harden the resin. It’s then polished to match the natural sheen of the rest of your teeth.
